How DWP Digital are nurturing young tech leaders

DWP Digital are helping to nurture young tech talent to become stand-out young leaders in their sector.

Olivia Maxwell, Senior DevOps Lead, has progressed quickly, from apprentice to her current role in 2 years, and has now been nominated for a Young Leader Of The Year Award.

She is 1 of 2 DWP Digital employees up for the Young Digital Leader Of The Year Award at Digital Leaders 100 on Thursday 22nd June 2023, with Ben Coleman, Email Transformation Security lead, also nominated.

Olivia has made a real impact in the Data Analytics and Monitoring squads since joining the team. She’s been instrumental in onboarding DWP Digital’s customers to a new monitoring solution where she has innovated automated solutions.

She said: “I’m proud to be part of an organisation that has a culture for developing young people and giving them opportunities to lead. Especially women, where nationally the number of women in tech stands at just 17%.”

DWP Digital’s other young leader of the year nominee, Ben, has recently ensured the move from legacy security controls to cloud solutions was successful culminating in around £750k savings per year.

Olivia and Ben will be attending Digital Leaders 100 List award ceremony during Digital Leaders Week, where they will find out if they have won the Young Leader of the Year.

Supporting young leaders

DWP Digital support their young leaders to be able to implement and role-model effective ways of working and keep their teams informed and engaged.

They encourage a continuous approach to learning to ensure that young leaders are developing throughout their careers and always have support when it comes to progression.

By using a ‘Careers Toolbox’ to capture, monitor, and measure workforce skills against their job roles and industry standard frameworks, valuable insight is captured. This allows for individualised talent development plans to be created giving young leaders the direction, tools, and resources to control and drive their own careers.

Targeted apprenticeship schemes, industrial placements and development programmes attract the best young leaders to DWP Digital.

Offering flexible and hybrid working options ensuring employees have a positive work-life balance is just another benefit currently helping to attract young leaders into DWP Digital.

DWP Digital CDIO Rich Corbridge said: “I am delighted to see so many of our wonderful people and projects shortlisted in this year’s awards. It’s a true testament to the hard work, dedication and innovation of our teams and individuals.

Our people provide digital transformations that enable millions of users to access the help, advice and financial support they need.”
