Defining IP ratings and how to select a waterproof connector

Smartphones and portable electronics are all around us and so too are the hazards that can impact their performance, such as dust or liquids. Protections that shield devices from these unforeseen contaminants are now an almost expected feature from users. However, it is crucial for designers to understand the various ingress protection (IP) rating classifications to ensure adequate protection ratings are implemented given the intended application.

USB receptacles, audio jacks, and other external connectors can also be overlooked by designers as a typical entry point for particulates and moisture. If a connector with an appropriate IP rating is not selected for a design, ingress of these environmental factors could easily degrade performance or damage internal circuitry.

The CUI Insights blog post, “The Basics of IP Ratings and IP Rated Connectors” breaks down IP rating classifications, while outlining selection and design criteria for IP rated connectors.
