ETH London Hackathon: a student perspective

Rehan Benuka recently attended the ETH London Hackthon event, hosted by Encode Club, and gave his perspective on the event.

A 3-day hackathon organised by Encode Club in London took place for the first time since 2020, with $90k+ in prizes and participants from all around the globe!

Pre-event meetup

Everyone was Invited to a pre-event meetup organised and sponsored (free cakes, coffee & tea) by ETH Dublin where we had the opportunity to meet some of the speakers at the event who discussed about very important issues in the industry.

One of the key points that was discussed at the ETH Dublin sponsored Cafe meet was that developers do not want to learn languages or frameworks for just one specific blockchain. That’s why the need for SDKs is important, and solidity and rust are the go-to languages for blockchain engineers. Solidity can be used with Ethereum and other EVM-compatible blockchains, and Rust is not just native to smart contracts but also a general programming language.

The event

The event kicked off with sponsor stalls, workshops, speeches, and hacking with help of 1-1 mentors. There was a whole list of bounties to chase from overall best to product specific bounties and no-code bounties as well. The event venue was filled with teams hacking their projects up all night and sleeping on bean bags for a few hours.

The contestants also enjoyed an extra hour on Sunday when the clocks went from 2am back to 1am ending BST (+01:00 UTC) and back to GMT (00:00 UTC).

There were a number of workshops and presentations by companies such as Google, Tezos, Hyperlane, and many more, which gave insights on the state of the industry and their contributions to the industry.

Post event

After the ETH London Hackthon there was Another sponsored meetup at Tortilla where we were able to speak with the winners of the Event in which we were able to get valuable insights.

  • The first place winner was “Save Me Granny”, who are in the field of law by profession but self-taught programmers who already run a successful defi startup.
  • A lot of people who attended the event from different parts of the world are traveling next to Devconnect, Istanbul, on 13th-19th November and will be attending the major events around the world from the ETH global calendar
  • Encode club organises a lot of free bootcamps and helps you get hired if you want to become a blockchain engineer.

Overall winners

  • 1st place – Save Me Granny
  • 2nd place – Quantum Oracles
  • 3rd place – Real-time Music Exchange

The winners received a NORD security bundle worth $240 to each member of the top three teams and Devconnect co-working tickets, as well as certified recognition for their accomplishments.

Final thoughts

Overall, the ETH London Hackathon was a successful and exciting event that brought together developers and enthusiasts from the blockchain industry. There are still a lot of opportunities for developers and enthusiasts from bounties, grants, job offers that are open to everyone worldwide.

You can find out more about the winners list, and other competition winners on Rehan’s Blog page.
