Stoke-on-Trent to host local students at ‘Next Engineers’ experience scheme

Stoke-on-Trent College will this July host up to 200 local students for an engineering experience fortnight that offers a taste of college life.

Staffordshire students aged between 14 and 15 (Year 10) will have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Next Engineers: Engineering Experience’, immersing themselves in all things engineering between July 11 and 18.

With access to world-leading expertise and equipment, successful students will complete design challenges inspired by real-world scenarios, building their own identity as aspiring engineers.

Lead Manufacturing Engineer at GE Renewable Energy Garry Warrilow said: “Addressing the limited exposure for students to engineering is incredibly important and is what our Engineering Experience programme aims to tackle.

“This opportunity gives students a chance to meet and share experiences with a diverse group of young people.

“The tasks will be enjoyable and stimulating for budding engineers, with students set to benefit from the guidance of some of the best and brightest.”

Next Engineers is a five-year programme focused on increasing the diversity of young people in engineering, with Staffordshire one of four global locations.

Engineering Experience, run by local partner Connectr, was designed to provide students with the best possible start to life as engineers, allowing them to get involved in the engineering process at the earliest possible stage.

It is free to all candidates, and students who are eligible for free school meals can benefit from reimbursed travel costs.

Garry said: “We’re confident our summer programme will inspire the next generation of students to get into engineering.”

The sessions will take place at Stoke on Trent College’s Cauldron Campus and run from July 11 to 18.

Students will be selected to attend one of these weeks.

During the five days, there will be trips to the engineering department at Stoke-on-Trent College and well-known engineering organisations, such as General Electric Stafford.

All applications for the programme must be submitted by Friday, May 20, 2022.
