12 ways to use ChatGPT as a student

Taking the world by storm since its launch at the end of 2022, ChatGPT has demonstrated its endless uses and the demand for its service.

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a chatbot developed by OpenAI, powered by its GPT-3 language model, capable of interacting in a conversational way. Within the first two months of its launch ChatGPT has had over 100 million users, and its popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing.

Whether you want to use the chatbot to summarise text, translate text into a different language or brainstorm ideas, the use cases are endless. And it could prove exceptionally helpful for students.

Here, we’ve rounded up 12 ways you can use ChatGPT as a student.

  1. As a more complex source of information than Google
  2. Access relevant examples to use within your work
  3. Ask for definitions
  4. Ask for feedback on your work
  5. Generate new ideas
  6. Ask it for advice and wider research
  7. Use it for insight into big, difficult to solve mathematical problems
  8. Ask it to explain and break down difficult concepts
  9. Take several responses and make a better product
  10. Generate and mark practice questions
  11. Summarise and paraphrase texts
  12. Generate ideas and responses to questions

ChatGPT is a powerful tool for students with a wide range of applications. However, it’s important to follow best practices. Using the tool to generate and submit work that isn’t your own is still plagiarism, and academics are already on the case to stamp down on academic integrity. Surveys already state that cheating using ChatGPT is on the rise, with 25% of surveyed teachers catching at least one student cheating.

Career coach and mentor, Vince Pizzoni said: “For Chat GBT-3 this technology has widespread application in many areas including customer service, education and in business development. I think students need to be aware that these technologies are not perfect and of course cannot replace the human factor in instances where empathy and gut feel are important. I think time will tell as to how important these become in our daily work.”
