University of Bath Vice-Chancellor made a Fellow of CSEE

Professor Phil Taylor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bath, has been made a Fellow of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering (CSEE).

The organisation granted Professor Taylor a Fellowship in recognition of his status as an internationally recognised expert in energy systems with more than 30 years of experience in industry and academia, and his longstanding engagement with industry and universities in China.

Among Professor Taylor’s accomplishments, the CSEE highlighted the 2024 China-UK Future Energy System Development Forum, which promoted co-operation and exchange of decarbonisation research between more than 100 industry and academic experts from the two countries.

Professor Taylor said: “I’m honoured to have been appointed a Fellow of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering.  This recognises not only my own work but the efforts of my colleagues and partners, including here at the University of Bath, to engage globally with our academic and commercial counterparts working to prepare our nations’ energy systems for the 21st century and beyond.

“China and the UK are among the world’s leaders when it comes to modernising and decarbonising power networks. We can each learn a huge amount and make significant global impacts by working together towards a low-carbon future.”

Appointed as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University in August 2024, Professor Taylor is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Higher Education Academy. In 2022, he was appointed to the Government’s Net Zero Innovation Board.

Professor Taylor designed the grid connection scheme for the UK’s first commercial offshore wind farm, and led the UK’s largest smart grid project, the £54 million Customer Led Network Revolution.

His industry experience includes several years at GEC Alstom, EPS (UK), Teradyne, and Senergy Econnect where he held the position of Research and Development Director.

Prior to joining the University of Bath in 2024, Professor Taylor was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University of Bristol. He has also held senior positions at Newcastle University and Durham University.
