Top terms and challenges in IoT

This post covers top IoT terms and challenges. IoT usage is growing rapidly. Manufacturers are creating more and more IoT devices. Consumers buy and use more and more devices, that are being connected to the network. Let’s consider the terms used in IoT industry and what problems we may face using IoT products.

The theorists predicts for IoT to lead to hyperconnected world, that means exponential growth of applications for IoT. Business Insider’s research says there will be around 24 billion devices by 2020 in the world.

Different resources offer different explanations and definitions of IoT. However  all of them means collaboration of networks and computing capability, using different kinds of devices  sensors, and products considered as computers. Finally IoT creates the ecosystem, that unites businesses, consumers, networks, devices, software, security.

The IoT ecosystem combines the following elements: physical layer, network layer, application layer, remotes, dashboard, analytics, data storage, networks and security.

The following IoT technology trends are being very popular and important now:

Ubiquitous connectivity. It is low-cost, high-speed, pervasive network connectivity via wireless services and technology, evolving and incorporating newly appearing signal and system structures, new technologies for adaptive and data-aware networks, cloud system architectures and networks.

IP-based connectivity.  IP is a very spread connectivity standard with well defined platform and software. It can be integrated in a huge variety of products. IP connectivity standard allows data communication between end user and information management system. This connection usually refers to 3G-4G networks.

Computing economics . Industry brings more and more investments in a research, development, and manufacturing. This term is an incorporation between computing science, economics and management. In this case economics and management are widely using highly advanced computing methods for problems solving. Computers are modelling solutions for analytical and statistical economical problems.

Miniaturisation. Industrial developments, growing research allows to integrate new technological solutions into small form-factor. It allows to integrate complex technology, into smaller devices.

Advances in data analytics. Amount of data usage grows year after year, implementation of new algorithms, and analysis  methods growth rapidly.

Cloud computing rise. Cloud computing allows to make remote computing processes easier, to store data, and make all M2M interaction processes in the cloud.

The industrial applications and usage of IoT devices are growing drastically.  The problem, concerning users and businesses is security of IoT devises. It was done a lot within last years to improve security of IoT devices, however a few problems still left.

Risk to be hacked. More devices appears behind the firewall, more devices are vulnerable to be hacked – computers, home appliances, smart-phones, cars and other devices connected to our home networks.

Risk of private information to be stolen. In accordance to several researches many people around the world are concerned that their private information can be stolen from IoT system.

Complex security. Security provided by IoT ecosystem should exist on all levels of the ecosystem – for the device itself, for network, for software –that make the whole system more and more complex.
