What are the materials used for constructing electronic components?
Electronic components usually consist of different types of materials – metals, semiconductors and insulators. And it is not solely the chemical elements itself that’s important, but the compositions of them. Depending on what component is being constructed several chemical elements can be used including Al, P, Ga, N, Si and others.
They are usually layered one onto the other, creating the following structure for a MOSFET (for example) Si wafer (semiconductor) - p layer (semiconductor)+n-layers (semiconductor) – oxide layer (insulator) – semiconductor layer – metallisation. Si is the most widely used element during the electronic components manufacturing, as this is a basic material – wafer constituent.
