Engineering Project Management: Project time management

Project time management is an important part of project development. It consists of the following:

  • project activity reviews
  • project activities sequencing
  • time estimation for conducting project activities
  • project activities scheduling
  • project activities timing control

Project activity reviews involve documenting the activities and supporting activities needed to conduct the project successfully. They should be documented in the WBS. The starting points for activities definition are WBS, scope management, any relevant statements and limitations for project performance. The outputs of the project time management should be the action list for the project performance, containing the full structure and all supporting details.

The project activity sequencing involves documenting and analysing the relationship between the project activities and placing them in the correct logical order for correct project performance. The inputs of the project activity sequences should be the general activities list, categorising the activities as mandatory and unrestricted. The project manager should use the PDM tool (Precedence Diagram Method), ADM (standing from Arrow Diagram Method) and other diagramming techniques. The output of the project activity sequencing should be the list of activities and the project evaluation diagram.

The time estimation for conducting project activities is about resuming the project activities, resuming the resources, planning the amount of activities, deliverables and time estimation for conducting and delivering these processes. The inputs are the activity list, resources overview, the requirements and delivery timings, and risk analysis. The techniques are the top-down estimation and opinion of experts. The output should be the updated activity plan with descriptions and requirements for deliverables.

The project activity schedule is about the estimation of the start date and finish date for the project conduction. The project iteration can also be done during the scheduling phase. The inputs for the scheduling are calendars, project activity plan, project activity duration, resource summary, and risk estimations. The activity scheduling techniques involve mathematical analysis techniques (CPM, GERT and PERT), project management software and simulations. The output of the scheduling stage should be the project schedule with the supporting details, and project schedule management plan.

The project activity timing control is about the management of possible changes in the project schedule, the influencing factors that make schedule changes, and the creation of project schedule updates. The inputs are project performance reports and change requests. The techniques are the project management software and additional planning. The output is the schedule update and action plan. [1]
