Lorenzo Trivigno, working with Ibstock Brick

Ibstock Brick

Based in Nottingham, Lorenzo Trivigno is a Make UK apprentice in his third year working with Ibstock Brick at its Dorket Head facility.

He is currently working towards an NVQ qualification and is on a residential placement, travelling to Make UK’s Technology Hub every week while working for Ibstock in his hometown.

Here he shares his thoughts on apprenticeships.

“I’ve always liked working with my hands and making things, my dad’s a joiner so I grew up mending things and improving them with trial and error. After I left school, I helped friends out with trade work like joinery and laying new floors, which I really enjoyed. Being an apprentice was a no-brainer, it was the natural step for me.

“No day’s the same as an apprentice one day we could be adding new sockets or ring circuits and the next adding sensors to programmable logic controllers (PLCs) on production lines. At Ibstock, we work on both industrial and domestic installations, and I’ve also worked on plumbing upgrades by installing three new electric heaters. You just don’t get this diversity being sat in a classroom and it’s rewarding to get paid while learning on-the-job.

“There’s such a good morale where I work, everyone is happy and there are lots of different characters. It’s a fun place to work, there is a lot of banter but at the same time we all work really hard and enjoy working together, which is what you want.

“After I complete my apprenticeship, I want to excel in my career and understand more about the electrics side of the business doing an NVQ and working at Ibstock Brick has already stood me in good stead for this.”
